Parent's Guide to Video Games

Parent's Guide to Video Games

Parent’s Guide to Video Games—one of the few titles coauthored with my wife, Janet—was written to help parents choose appropriate games and accessories for their children. Ratings and reviews are presented for a selection of more than 80 Nintendo (NES), Super Nintendo (SNES), and Sega Genesis games. In addition, helpful suggestions are provided for making game play a positive family experience, selecting games for girls, picking a game system, and keeping costs down.

Author note: Although Nintendo rigorously policed its games to ensure that they contained no over-the-top violence, Sega didn’t adhere to similar guidelines. Between 1992 and 1993, spurred by the outrage of parents over ultra-violent games such as the Genesis version of Mortal Combat, the Senate held hearings on violence and sex in video games.
